Earlier this week, we reported news from the organizers of Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) lifting the ban placed on dancehall musicians Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy.
The board in an official statement published on February 15, agreed to make the two dancehall artistes eligible to participate in this and subsequent editions of the VGMA if they so desire.
What seemed like a good news to music lovers has been met with bad taste due to the medium the award organizers used to announce the lifting of the ban.
Some celebrities including the two musicians have complained bitterly on why the board did not inform them before making their decision to lift the ban public.
Others even alleged that the board decided to lift the ban because they wanted to capitalize on the popularity of these two brands to increase their ticket sales.
Below are four Ghanaian musicians who publicly rubbished VGMA’s decision to lift the ban off Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy.
Shatta Wale’s manager Bulldog labelled the board’s decision as daft because they lifted the ban on the two artistes without prior notice to the management of the musicians.
He added that their decision cannot avert the emotional trauma Shatta Wale went through when he was arrested and sent to court.
Veteran Ghanaian music producer Hammer supported the words of Stonebwoy after the singer also aired his displeasure on the issue.
He said considering the level of importance of the two dancehall artistes in the entertainment industry, the board should have duly informed them before making any public announcement.
Hammer added that the award scheme knows they will not survive without the participation of these two entertainers that is why they hastily lifted their ban without prior notice.
Danchall musician Chrales Nii Armah Mensah aka Shatta wale recorded series of videos hauling unprintable insults on the VGMA Board for the same reasons as mentioned above.
He took the controversial route to announce that he will not participate in the awards scheme even if the ban has been lifted.
Shatta added that he has notice the Awards organisers want to ride of their brands to promote the upcoming event and so they should schedule a meeting with his team so they talk business.
Stonebwoy took to twitter to write that even the almighty God asked the opinion of Adam and Eve before sacking them from the garden of Eden but VGMA board did not consult them before taking any decision.
“Dear VGMA Board & Scheme organisers,I hear the purpose of the VGMA is to celebrate and project Ghanaian musicians and music. If that is so, it takes nothing from you to meet with us the artistes/ our reps b4 reaching decisions that affect us and communicating them to the public,” He tweeted.
