The Seven Supreme Court Judges Hearing Mahama’s 2020 Election Petition And The SHS They Attended

Meet the 7 Supreme Court justices who are hearing John Dramani Mahama’s 2020 election petition and the SHS they attended.

While a school of thought argues that the type of school one attends influences the overall academic and career outlook of one’s life, another may strongly opine that success in the academic and industrial world is contingent upon the individual, and does not necessarily depend on the school one attends.

Today, we have the chance to explore the educational background of the current seven-member panel hearing the 2020 election petition, particularly the Senior High Schools they attended. 

1. Justice Mariama Owusu.

The renowned judge is one of the three female judges appointed by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2019 to replace the three retired Supreme Court Judges (Justice Vida Akoto-Bamfo, Justice Sophia Akuffo and Justice Sophia Adjeibea Adinyira).

Justice Owusu hails from Beposo in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. And she is proudly an old student of T.I Ahmadiyya, popularly known as T.I AMASS, Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. 

That is where she got the chance to attain her form six education, and currently climbed to the position of a Supreme Court Judge. 

2. Justice Nane Abayateye Ofoe Amegatcher

He quadruples as an Adjunct Professor at the Ghana School of Law, a Supreme Court Judge, Founding Member of the National Union Council of Baptist Students, and Chairman of the African Regional Hub of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association.

The astute judge attained his Ordinary Level Certificate from the Presbyterian Boys’Secondary School, Legon, but failed his Mathematics, Government and Economics papers, so he rewrote those papers at the Accra Workers’College. 

After passing those papers, he joined Apam Secondary School for his Advanced Level Certificate.

3. Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

The active and faculty member of the Governing Board of the Judicial Training Institute, former Chief Editor of the Development of Judicial Ethics Training Manual, and renowned Supreme Court Judge, had to chance to attend the Wesley Girls’High School for her Ordinary Level Certificate. 

Torkornoo then joined Achimota School for her Advanced Level Certificate.

4. Justice Emmanuel Nii Ashie Kotey

Justice Kotey is proudly an old student of St. Thomas Acquinas Senior High School. He obtained his Ordinary Level Certificate from the school in 1971. 

He then proceeded to Apam Senior High School for his Advanced Level Certificate in 1973.

5. Justice Samuel Marful-Sau

Born on February 3, 1957 in Assin Adubiase in the Central Region of Ghana, Justice Marful-Sau commenced his secondary education at the Assin Manso Secondary School, and further moved to Feden High School. 

Later, he joined the Breman Asikuma Secondary School for his Ordinary Level Certificate. 

Justice Samuel then moved to Navrongo Secondary School for his Advanced Level Certificate.

6. Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah

The current Ghana’s Chief Justice was born in May 1953 in Toase in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He had his secondary education at the Amaniampong Secondary School as well as Apam Secondary School.

7. Justice Yaw Appau

Born on August 2, 1951, Justice Appau has since 2015 been an active judge of the highest court of the land, the Supreme Court, and currently part of the seven-member panel hearing the 2020 election petition. 

Justice Appau intially had his secondary education at the Prempeh College but due to financial challenges he could not successfully attain his Ordinary Level Certificate. 

He then dropped out and joined the Ajumako Teacher Training College for Teachers’ Certificate ‘A’. 

Appau later attained both his Ordinary Level Certificate and Advanced Level Certificate as a private candidate.
