Samia Suluhu Hassan Biography

Samia Suluhu Hassan was born on 27 January 1960 in the Sultanate of Zanzibar. She is the current president of Tanzania.

Education

Samia attended her Primary Education from different schools including Chwaka Primary School in Unguja in 1966 to 1968 She then changed to Ziwani Primary school in Pemba from 1970 to 1971 and there after, Mahonda Primary School in Unguja in 1972.

In 1973 to 1975 Samia Hassan joined Ngambo and Lumumba Secondary School in Unguja.  Then, in 1977 she joined The Zanzibar Institute of Financial Administration (ZIFA) where she pursued Statistics Studies.

Further more, In 1986 Samia Suluhu joined the Institute of Development Management- IDM (present Mzumbe University) for more studies in Public Administration.

She later on joined the National Institute of Public Administration in Lahore, Pakistan. After tha, in 1991 she enrolled to the Institute of Management for Leaders, Hyderabad in India for a Certificate in Management Course.

She later on attended the University of Manchester in London for graduate studies to do Postgraduate Diploma in Economics. In 2004 -2005, she then progressed to Masters Degree in Community Economic Development.

Family/Husband/Children

Samia Suluhu got married to Hafidh Ameir in 1978, who is currently a retired agricultural officer. They have four children.

Political Journey

2000 – A special seat member to the Zanzibar House of Representatives and was appointed a minister by President Amani Karume. She was later on re-elected in 2005 and was re-appointed as a minister in another portfolio.

2010, – National Assembly, contesting in the parliamentary constituency of Makunduchi and winning by more than 80%. There after, then president, Jakaya Kikwete appointed her as the Minister of State for Union Affairs.

2014 – Elected as the Vice Chairperson of the Constituent Assembly

July 2015- John Magufuli ran with her in the presidential race, she then became the first female vice-president in the history of Tanzania.

She is a member of longest serving political party Chama Cha Mapenduzi (CCM)

Suluhu later became the 6th President of Tanzania since independence, and the country’s first female president.That also made her the first female president in East Africa.
